As more and more interviews are happening via video, it is important to create a good impression before the face-to-face meeting takes place. Softwares like Zoom are being used by many organisations. Just like any other form interviews, it holds its pros and cons. Since Zoom is widely used amidst the COVID pandemic, here are a few tips to make you comfortable and professional during your interview.
Prior to your interview
~ Have a go at practising using Zoom so that you are confident with the tools.
~ Ensure your internet connection is good and stable.
~ Ensure your laptop is fully charged, OS and softwares are updated.
~ Clean your computer screen; desktop icons and applications are well presented, in case you need to share your screen with the interviewer (this shows that you are an orderly person).
~ Ensure you are in a well-lit room (avoid light behind your back as it will cast a shadow on your face) as much as you can, sit in front of a lamp, window etc.. let your face be in the light.
~ Ensure you are in a quiet room (nobody wants to hear the constant barking of the dog in the background ).
~ Make sure you have a clear background behind you (the employer would be distracted to see your clothes hanging behind your door or any other gadgets that may divert his attention). You can always change your virtual background to an image, Zoom provides you a library of preloaded options or you can upload your own or better have your favorite books or your certificates displayed in the background.

~ Keep a pen and writing pad next to you.
For your interview
~ Dress professionally as you would when attending a face to face interview, though the interviewer will not be seeing the whole outfit.
~ Avoid bright colours, big patterns or too much accessories. Keep it Simple and remember dress for success!
~ Put your phone on silence
~ Log in to the meeting at least 5 minutes prior to start
~ Your body language can convey your internal feelings. Your aim is to present confidence and positivity. Sit tall, do not cross your arms and be natural.
~ Look in the camera of your laptop while speaking, this will help maintain professional eye contact with the interviewer (Body language still counts).
~ Be enthusiastic, thank the interviewer for the opportunity to have the interview, smile, engage and listen.
~ Note down important points or questions you may have. It's better to be prepared for the time you will be asked if you have any questions.
~ After the interview is over, thank the interviewer for his/her time using his name (thank you Mr Smith, or Mrs Johnson).
~ You can ask about the next steps of the interview process if it has not been mentioned to you.
~ ALWAYS follow up with a thank you email to the interviewer. (This shows the employer that you are grateful for the opportunity and increases the odds of you being selected for the role).
If you ask me, personally virtual interviews benefits both the candidate and interviewer for it includes time saving, travel cost saving and besides nailing that virtual interview, demonstrates your ability to adapt and excel in any environment.
That’s a bonus point :)
